"I've never liked thinking about myself but I'm getting better at it!"

I’ve only recently discovered that it’s okay to take your time to figure out what you actually want to do with your life. I was one to feel guilty about not figuring out where I was going straight out of university. After six years of intense study, I didn’t even know if dietetics was what I wanted to do. I used to convince myself that I was not on the right path. I would get lost in my own thoughts, always thinking that I was the odd one out. And maybe I was and that’s okay, but I’ve realised now that I just didn’t understand, at that time, I wasn’t ready.
I’ve had to learn to trust myself. When people would ask me how my job hunting was going or what my plans were after graduating, I would straight up lie (maybe to myself also) and just make something up, because that’s what I thought they wanted to hear or that it was the ‘correct’ thing to say.
I now try to be more mindful of my thoughts and what I want. I’m trying to relay this in my everyday and working life. I’m still not someone who likes to think and talk about themselves or become emotionally reflective but it has become an essential part of my professional identity. As well as being able to do my job better, being in tune with myself and my emotions has helped me balance out my life to suit MY needs and not just everyone else’s.
Reflecting on the year that was, I took time for ME - I took the time to focus on what I wanted to do for work, I took time to grieve the loss of a family member, and I took the time I needed to travel and grow with my partner. I wanted time for me. Which made me realise - that it IS okay to be selfish sometimes.
So this is a pledge to my approach for my business. Everyone has their timelines for change and everyone has their own emotional journeys. My role as a health professional is to support you along this journey. I am not one to judge, I am one to help you at your pace.
